Hard Disk Drive and Solid State Drive :
HDD(Hard Disk Drive) and SSD(Solid State Drive) are secondary storage devices, that store the data permanently. In this we can read, write or add data. It is a large storage device that stores data in binary code, i.e. machine language. The world's first hard disk was made by IBM company with a storage capacity of only 5MB and weighing 250kg
Hard Disk Drive(HDD) :
HDD(Hard Disk Drive) is also called a secondary storage device in which data remains until the data is deleted or the hard disk gets corrupted. The hard disk consists of two or more metal disc called platters and there is a thin layer of magnetic material on the platter, hence it is also called an electromechanical storage device. The platter has a lot of track and sectors and all the platter rotates with the help of a spindle. It reads or writes the data by spinning the disc.
The HDD(Hard Disk Drive) has an actuator on the mechanical arm that reads or writes the data. The faster the plotter rotates, the faster the data is read or write. The speeds of the platter is 5400RPM to 7200RPM. The platter speed in the HDD slows down over time because in HDD, the data is store into a pieces therefore it takes time to find the data, so periodically defragment or remove the data from the hard disk
Solid State Drive(SSD) :
SSD is also called Solid State Drive. SSD(Solid State Drive) is smaller and consumes less power than HDD. Instead of platter, microchip are used to store data in SSD(Solid State Drive), therefore it is faster than HDD. In SSD, the microchip is made of semiconductor. In SSD, instead of mechanical arm, embedded processor is installed, which is also known as controller and this controller read or writes the data.
Difference between Hard Disk Drive and Solid State Drive :
- SSD reads or writes data faster than HDD.
- SSD consumes less power than HDD.
- SSD is much lighter than HDD.
- The file copying speed in HDD ranges from 50mbps to 120 Mbps.
- The speed of copying files in SSD varies from 200mbps to 500 Mbps.
- SSD has no moving part like HDD so there is no sound in it.
- HDD is much cheaper than SSD.
In recent times, most PCs and laptops are come with SSD storage devices, because it is the faster, durable and consumes less power.
