What is Virtual Memory in OS?

     Virtual memory is not a physical memory like RAM or ROM. It is a software that resides in most operating systems. Like RAM and ROM, virtual memory is also an most important memory of a computer or mobile. In multitasking operating systems, this memory is used a lot.

    Sometimes we have to run a lot of applications at once to complete a task, so the RAM memory gets full and we are unable to run other applications, in such a way, virtual memory stores the data of RAM in hard disk and RAM memory is freed. Virtual memory stores the data of a minimized application on a hard disk.

    In windows and other operating systems, you can increase the size of the virtual memory, which boost up the performance of the computer, or you can also convert secondary storage such as pen drive and memory card into virtual memory.
